Exactly. This is rampant in South America, too, where I'm from. There are plenty of white priests in the cultus of Ifa and Kongo who went through the proper initiation and did not erase the importance of their black masters... But there are even more (many, many more. It's incomparable!) white people straight-up appropriating traditions from these religions just because they once attended a ritual or read about it. There are entire sects being created by these appropriators and passed on as legit when in fact they're anything but. It's sad - but not surprising.
