This is so true! Ya know what's crazy? Both my mother AND grandmother (narc, the two of them lol) would even keep "teaching" me it's outrageous to let someone else walk in front of me and I should pick up speed because otherwise I'd be falling behind and "losing". Like it was a game made-up by a 5-year-old. It was SO WEIRD, I never understood why it bothered them. Now I know.
