Yes. One of the most frustrating tasks in the world is trying to open white, western, industrial people's eyes to the fact THEIR rules of conduct are cultural and arbitrary too. It's very easy to point fingers to "ethnic" people and call them exotic or weird; But we're oblivious to the fact that human behaviour, EVERYWHERE, is arbitrary and, yes, "weird". Even white people's arbitrary rules that made their way into Academia (an environment a lot more diverse these days, but which still blindly follows rules of etiquette that can be traced back to Victorian Europe). Ain't nothing "common sense" or "normal" about that. But most people aren't ready for this conversation. This is why I love this article so much. If I could give it more than 50 claps I would.
